Sambal is a traditional Indonesian chilli paste, often likened to a relish. It is traditionally made by grinding chillies using a stone pestle and mortar along with other ingredients such as shrimp paste, garlic, tomato, lime juice, shallot... or whatever takes your fancy!

Sambal can be made with different spice levels dependant upon what variety of chillies are used and ofcourse, how many; ranging from very mild to extremely hot!

There are broadly two types of sambal, sambal masak (cooked) and sambal mentah (raw). Cooked sambals are very popular as the cooking process creates a distinct flavour and aroma - the variety of sambals available in Indonesia is huge and it is common for different sambal recipes to be used to accompany different dishes.

Sambal Naknan in the UK...

I love spicy food and so it's no surprise that I love sambal! I often make my own sambal, but you can't beat being able to grab a jar and enjoy straight away when you get a craving for a chilli-fix!

Sambal Naknan is very popular in Indonesia right now and it's very tasty! (enak sekali!) I've tried all of the different chilli spice levels... and honestly, Sambal Naknan Level 5 is super spicy! I will be making Sambal Naknan availbale regularly in my UK shop.
